New $100 million quarry to supply booming California market

In a unique arrangement with local First Nations, the Eagle Rock Quarry on the west coast of Vancouver Island will be shipping gravel to California. The proposed $100 million aggregate quarry is located on the western shore of Alberni Inlet, complete with a deep-sea loading facility for shipping to California ports such as San Francisco and the Los Angeles Basin.

The quarry is a joint venture between the private sector and local First Nations, the largest partnership of its kind so far in BC’s history.

Many more opportunities for quarry operations like Eagle Rock exist in BC, where granite-rich mountains come right down to the ocean’s edge in sheltered, navigable waters. Instead of trucking overland, gravel can be quickly and cost-effectively shipped south of the border. American regulations also make it more expensive to ship between US cities than by importing from Canada.
