The provincial government recently added $27.5 million to further genomic research
and to strengthen BC’s
infrastructure for scientific innovation and advancement. Health Services Minister
Colin Hansen says the finding, “is an investment in the future of health
care in BC, which will open the door for even more made-in-Canada health care
treatments
and drugs, creating more spinoff companies, jobs, and tools to improve health
care.”
In
total, along with the federal government’s contribution, $68 million dollars
is currently going toward research and development in the life sciences cluster.
Five research projects are currently underway on human gene function, early stage cancer, forestry genomics and the interaction of micro-organisms with their environment. Over 10 hospitals, universities, companies and not-for-profit foundations are participating.
Since June 2001, the province has committed almost $900 million to increase advanced education research and access, including $150 million to double the number of technology graduates in BC over five years.
